On 22nd July 2024, night, parts of Tripura experienced a mild earthquake, measuring 3.1 on the Richter scale, according to officials. The tremor was reported in Tripura’s Gomati district and surrounding areas, as confirmed by the state disaster management authority today. Fortunately, there were no reports of casualties or damage to property.
The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) indicated that the earthquake occurred at 10:55 pm, originating from a depth of 7 km below the surface. “EQ of M: 3.1, On: 22/07/2024 22:55:59 IST, Lat: 23.72 N, Long: 91.70 E, Depth: 7 Km, Location: Gomati, Tripura,” the NCS posted on its official social media platform.
Tripura, along with Mizoram, has been identified as a high-risk earthquake zone due to its location in seismic zone V within the Indo-Myanmar fold belt. According to the Vulnerability Atlas of India (1997), Tripura is categorized as a “very high earthquake damage risk-zone” (category V, magnitude 7.0 to 7.5), highlighting ongoing vulnerability to seismic activities. Additionally, the state faces risks from severe storms and floods.
