President Droupadi Murmu has expressed serious concern over the increase in crimes against women in India, particularly following the rape and murder of a young doctor in Kolkata. In an interview with PTI, she declared, “Enough is enough!” and called for urgent “honest and unbiased self-introspection” within society to address these issues.
The case, involving a postgraduate trainee doctor who was allegedly raped and murdered on August 9, has prompted widespread protests nationwide. Sanjoy Roy, a Kolkata Police civic volunteer, has been arrested in connection with the incident.
President Murmu highlighted the ongoing issue of violence against women, noting that despite protests in Kolkata, similar crimes continue elsewhere. She stressed the need for a comprehensive approach to tackle the root causes of such violence effectively.
The Calcutta High Court has directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to handle the investigation and review any associated financial irregularities. The President’s comments reflect a call for systemic reform to enhance the safety and protection of women.
