Delhi Police have apprehended a Class 9 student for allegedly stealing gold jewelry from his mother to purchase an Apple iPhone and finance his girlfriend’s birthday party. The theft, reported on August 2 from a residence in Najafgarh, South West Delhi, was initially suspected to be the work of an unknown thief.
Investigators uncovered that the teenager had sold his mother’s gold earring, ring, and chain to local goldsmiths in Kakrola. The proceeds were used to buy the iPhone and cover other expenses related to his girlfriend’s celebration.
Police have also arrested 40-year-old goldsmith Kamal Verma, recovering a gold ring and earring from him. The boy was traced after inconsistencies in CCTV footage and witness statements led investigators to focus on the family.
The minor was caught with the stolen iPhone following a tip-off and initially denied involvement. However, he later admitted to the theft, revealing he had sold the gold to fund personal desires.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Ankit Singh noted that the boy’s academic struggles and desire to impress his girlfriend motivated his actions. This case underscores the lengths to which some youths will go to meet personal wants despite financial limitations.
