On Friday, 14 bodies were recovered from the Marsyangdi River in Nepal’s Tanahun district after a passenger bus with Uttar Pradesh registration plunged into the water while en route to Kathmandu. District Police Chief Mohan Thapa confirmed that 16 individuals were rescued and transported to a hospital for treatment.
Search operations are ongoing for at least 11 missing persons, with efforts led by the Nepal Army, police, and the Armed Police Force. An army helicopter, in coordination with the Indian embassy in Kathmandu, has been deployed to assist in the search.
Eyewitnesses reported that the bus, which had been traveling from Pokhara, fell into the river near Abu Khairani but did not fully submerge. The bus, registered under U P 54 7623, carried 41 passengers and had departed Pokhara on Friday morning.
Naveen Kumar G S, Relief Commissioner for Uttar Pradesh, stated that efforts are underway to determine if any passengers from the state were involved. The sub-divisional magistrate of Maharajganj will travel to Nepal, with the additional district magistrate overseeing coordination of the rescue efforts.
