WhatsApp is set to enhance user privacy with a new feature allowing users to replace their phone numbers with usernames. The upcoming “Username and PIN” option, spotted in WhatsApp Android beta version 2.24.18.2, will offer three privacy settings: “Username,” “Phone number,” and “Username with PIN.”
With the “Username” setting, users can hide their phone numbers and display only their usernames to new contacts. Existing contacts who already have the phone number will still see it. The “Username with PIN” option will enable users to use a four-digit PIN to control who can contact them; however, existing contacts with the phone number can still reach them.
The feature aims to bolster privacy and reduce spam. While there is no official release date, it is anticipated to launch by the end of the year and will be optional for users.
In addition, WhatsApp is planning to introduce a chat theme feature for iOS users, allowing customization of chat bubble colors and message previews.
