Nitesh Kumar successfully defended his SL3 category badminton title at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, securing India’s second gold medal of the Games. Kumar’s victory in the men’s standing/lower limb classification came against Britisher Daniel Bethell, who was defeated in his second consecutive Paralympics final against an Indian competitor.
Kumar’s tactical shift in gameplay played a crucial role in his win. Opting for a more defensive approach, he pushed Bethell into lengthy rallies, ultimately triumphing after a grueling 80-minute match. Kumar’s win was deeply symbolic, as he had made a tacit promise to 2021 Paralympics champion Pramod Bhagat to keep the SL3 gold in India.
Recalling his journey, Kumar spoke of his transition from football to badminton following a train accident that resulted in the loss of his leg. Supported by his father and inspired by fellow athletes, Kumar embraced badminton as a means to overcome adversity. His dedication was fueled by admiration for Virat Kohli’s fitness regime and his interactions with Bhagat, who had initially praised his badminton skills.
Kumar’s victory ensures that the gold medal remains in India, continuing a legacy of excellence in the SL3 category.
