Retired Indian hockey star PR Sreejesh, a pivotal figure in the team’s recent bronze medal win at the Paris Olympics, has been nominated for the prestigious FIH Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year Award 2024. The 36-year-old goalkeeper, often referred to as the “Great Wall of Indian Hockey,” expressed that every save he made during the tournament was for his teammates and the nation.
“This nomination reflects our collective spirit and the incredible journey we’ve had together,” Sreejesh said. His exceptional performance at the Olympics, especially during the intense quarterfinal against Great Britain, solidified his reputation. Despite India being reduced to ten players after a red card, Sreejesh’s critical saves and composure in the penalty shootout helped secure a 4-2 victory, propelling the team to the semifinals.
Having retired after an illustrious 18-year career, Sreejesh’s accolades include multiple FIH Goalkeeper of the Year awards, the Arjuna Award, and the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. He represented India in over 300 matches across four Olympic Games, making significant contributions to the sport.
“This nomination isn’t just mine; it’s for everyone who has supported me and Indian hockey,” he said. Sreejesh hopes his journey inspires future generations to pursue their dreams on the hockey field, marking a remarkable legacy in Indian sports.
