Severe cloudbursts have caused significant devastation across Himachal Pradesh, resulting in three confirmed deaths and around 50 people reported missing. Heavy rains have washed away numerous houses, bridges, and roads.
The state emergency operation centre reported that cloudbursts affected areas including Kullu, Mandi, and Shimla. The most severe cloudburst hit Samej Khud in Rampur, Shimla district, leading to two deaths and 28 people still missing. Rescue operations are complicated by damaged roads, but efforts are underway with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other teams using drones for search and rescue
In Mandi district, a cloudburst in Rajban near Terang resulted in one death and nine missing. Two houses were destroyed, and another was damaged. Kullu district also saw severe impacts with seven missing and several homes washed away in Bhagipul area.
Deputy Commissioner of Kullu, Torul S Raveesh, reported additional missing persons and damage near Samej. Although there was a breach in the Malana Dam, the situation is under control. The Manali-Chandigarh National Highway is disrupted due to landslides.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has assured support from the central government. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has confirmed extensive damage and is coordinating with additional NDRF teams, the Army, and the Air Force for relief operations. Union Minister J.P. Nadda and Congress leaders have also expressed their condolences and support.
State Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi highlighted the impact on road connectivity, with multiple road closures and damage to apple crops. Meteorological experts have issued an orange alert for continued heavy rain, with the wet weather expected to persist for several days. Rain-related incidents since June 27 have claimed 65 lives and caused Rs 433 crore in damage.
Efforts are ongoing to manage the crisis and provide relief to affected communities.
