A tragic drowning incident occurred on Wednesday in Gurugram’s Sector-37D at BPTP Park Serene, where a five-year-old boy, Mevansh Singla, lost his life due to what appears to be severe negligence by the society’s management. Initially swimming in a shallow pool designed for children, Mevansh wandered into a deeper pool meant for adults. The lifeguards on duty failed to notice him as he struggled in the water.
The horrifying incident was captured on CCTV at the clubhouse. The footage reveals that Mevansh struggled for several minutes in the 4-foot-deep pool while lifeguards, including one reportedly engrossed in his phone, did not come to his aid. Eyewitnesses and police reports indicate that Mevansh was left alone when his grandmother, who had brought him to the pool, went home briefly to fetch something.
According to the footage, Mevansh fought for two to three minutes before his body was discovered floating by a group of nearby children. Lifeguard Ankit eventually retrieved him, but no immediate attempts at resuscitation were made. He was rushed to a nearby private hospital but was declared dead upon arrival.
The boy’s family has lodged a formal complaint accusing the lifeguards and security staff of gross negligence. They assert that the lifeguards, who were expected to be trained professionals, failed in their duty to ensure safety. In response, residents of the township have protested at the clubhouse, criticizing the management for employing inadequately trained personnel.
An FIR has been filed against the lifeguards and the management under section 106 (causing death by negligence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, following the family’s complaint. Police have obtained and are reviewing CCTV footage as part of their investigation.
Gurugram Deputy Commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav has announced an inquiry to verify whether the swimming pools had the necessary permissions and adhered to construction regulations. The real estate firm behind the development, BPTP, has stated that the pool facilities, including lifeguard services, were managed by Ms. Sumit Swimming Institute. They have pledged to cooperate fully with the investigation and offer support to the grieving family during this challenging time.
