A wolf responsible for the deaths of at least eight people in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich district over the past two months has been captured, officials reported today. The recent fatality, an infant, occurred on Tuesday night.
The wolf, part of a pack of six, was trapped after forest officials used firecrackers to guide it into a specific path. It was then tranquillized and transported to a zoo. Four wolves have been captured so far, with two still believed to be at large.
The Uttar Pradesh government has launched ‘Operation Bhediya’ to address the crisis. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is closely monitoring the situation. Sixteen teams have been deployed, using drone cameras and thermal mapping to locate the wolves. Techniques include using elephant dung and urine to deter the wolves from inhabited areas.
District Magistrate Monika Rani announced increased security measures, including installing doors in houses without them, night patrols, and community awareness efforts led by ASHA workers.
