Rescue operations are ongoing in Wayanad’s Meppadi panchayat after landslides left around 180 people missing. On Tuesday, a coordinated effort involving the Army, NDRF, police, forest department, and Navy resumed.
A special 12-member Army and forest department team will be airlifted to the isolated Soochippara-Pothukallu area, with operations previously delayed by weather. Bodies found will be airlifted, officials said.
ADGP M R Ajithkumar noted that previous attempts to access the Chaliyar river area had stranded local volunteers, who were rescued. New teams of police SOG and army commandos will be air-dropped into these areas.
District Collector Meghashree D R emphasized that search efforts will target river regions near schools, villages, and downstream. Revenue Minister K Rajan added that a list of the missing is being prepared with local and ASHA worker assistance.
Currently, 1,174 personnel and 913 volunteers are involved in the search. The Public Works Department will assess and demolish damaged buildings.
The Kerala government has announced a comprehensive rehabilitation package, including land acquisition and infrastructure development, with a focus on mental health support for survivors. Finance Minister KN Balagopal also mentioned international aid for recovery efforts.
