In the midst of ongoing political unrest in Bangladesh, Sajeeb Wazed, son of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has dispelled rumors about his mother seeking asylum. From his base in Washington, Wazed confirmed that Hasina has not applied for asylum in either the United States or the United Kingdom. Currently in India, Hasina is reportedly considering retirement from politics following a recent coup, and may spend time with family members residing in various countries.
Wazed dismissed the notion that Hasina had sought asylum in the UK or US, explaining that her plans to retire were already underway. Her current movements are related to family commitments, with her sister in London and her daughter in Delhi.
Back in Bangladesh, Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon has urged India to arrest Hasina and her sister Sheikh Rehana, calling for their return to Bangladesh. Khokon remarked, “We wish to maintain positive relations with India. We request the arrest and return of Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana, who have fled the country.”
The political landscape in Bangladesh remains tense following Hasina’s resignation on August 5, which came in response to widespread protests primarily led by students demanding an end to the government job quota system.
