Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has expressed support for a central agency investigation into the alleged rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital. In a statement on Saturday, Banerjee said she has no objection to a CBI probe and emphasized that the case should be tried in a fast-track court with severe penalties for the guilty.
The doctor’s body was discovered on Friday with severe injuries and signs of sexual assault. Following her death, doctors at the hospital protested, demanding improved security and swift justice. Banerjee assured that the demands of the doctors are justified and stated that any negligence by hospital authorities would be investigated.
Opposition leaders, including BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari, have criticized the Bengal government, accusing it of attempting to cover up the incident. Adhikari called for the case to be transferred to the CBI for an impartial investigation. Banerjee, addressing these concerns, confirmed that her government has no objection to a CBI probe and is committed to resolving the case promptly.
