On Monday, the CBI arrested Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, along with his additional security guard Afsar Ali, and two medicine suppliers, Biplab Singha and Suman Hazra. The arrests were made following a lengthy interrogation of Ghosh, who faces allegations of corruption linked to the institution.
The arrested individuals were presented in Alipore court on Tuesday. As Ghosh entered the courtroom, a large crowd, including lawyers, gathered and chanted slogans against him. The situation escalated when the crowd attacked him while he was leaving the court. Amid the turmoil, a person managed to slap Ghosh.
In response to the ongoing investigation, the West Bengal Health Department suspended Ghosh and removed him from the West Bengal Medical Council and associated panels. The investigation was prompted by former deputy superintendent Dr. Akhtar Ali’s call for an ED probe, which was later transferred to the CBI by the Calcutta High Court.
The CBI has charged Ghosh and three Kolkata-based entities—Ma Tara Traders, Eshan Cafe, and Khama Louha—under criminal conspiracy, cheating, and anti-corruption provisions. The three other accused have applied for bail, while Ghosh has reportedly opted not to seek bail.
