India and the World Bank have agreed on a $500 million loan for the Green National Highway Corridors Project (GNHCP), a major new initiative costing $1.29 billion (INR 7,662.47 crore). This project will build 781 kilometers of highways in Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh, with the final stretch expected to be completed by May 2026.
Building Green and Safe Roads
The GNHCP aims to set a new standard for environmentally friendly highways. The project focuses on using green technologies and materials to conserve resources. It will feature recycled asphalt, cement-treated bases, and locally sourced materials like lime, fly ash, and waste plastic.
The project will also use advanced methods to protect slopes and prevent erosion, such as coco fiber blankets, hydroseeding, and bamboo plantations.
Environmental and Economic Impact
This project will help cut carbon emissions and conserve natural resources while ensuring that roads remain usable in all weather conditions. It will improve trade and access to remote areas, creating jobs and promoting economic growth in the regions it serves.
Overall, the GNHCP demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainable infrastructure and highlights the importance of integrating environmental care into large-scale projects.
