The Supreme Court of India has called for an end to the nationwide doctors’ strike in response to the rape and killing of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, leading a three-judge bench, emphasized the critical impact of the strike on patients in need of medical care and reassured doctors that their safety is a top priority.
In a suo-motu case, the court urged the medical community to trust the judiciary’s commitment to addressing their concerns. “We felt this is not just a matter of a serious offence but affects the entire healthcare system,” Chief Justice Chandrachud stated. The court’s intervention aims to ensure that medical professionals’ safety and protection are given the highest national concern.
The Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association welcomed the Supreme Court’s involvement, believing it will benefit the medical fraternity. The court’s plea stresses the importance of resuming medical services to avoid further harm to those dependent on healthcare.
