On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored the need for faster verdicts in crimes against women to enhance their safety. Speaking at an event marking the 75th anniversary of the Supreme Court in Delhi, he emphasized that while several laws address women’s safety, more active enforcement, and faster judicial processes are crucial.
Modi noted that the fast-track courts law, enacted in 2019, along with witness deposition centers and district monitoring committees, plays a vital role in addressing these issues. He urged further strengthening of these measures to ensure swift justice for cases involving women’s safety.
His comments follow recent outrage over the rape and murder of a woman doctor in Kolkata. In response to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s call for stricter central legislation and harsher penalties, the central government reiterated that current laws are sufficient and urged state compliance with these laws.
Union Minister for Women and Child Development, Annapurna Devi, supported this stance, stating that adherence to central legislation by state governments will strengthen the criminal justice system and ensure justice for victims.
Modi also highlighted ongoing efforts to reduce judicial delays and improve infrastructure to support a more efficient legal process.
