Resident doctors at Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) hospitals are continuing their strike following the assault of a female doctor at Sion Hospital by a drunk patient and his relatives. The doctors are demanding increased security and the implementation of the Central Healthcare Protection Act.
The strike, which began on August 13 in response to nationwide protests following a similar attack in Kolkata, has intensified. On Sunday, a patient and his intoxicated relatives verbally and physically abused the doctor in the casualty ward. An FIR was filed, leading to the detention and subsequent arrest of two individuals.
In addition to the strike, resident doctors are holding a silent march at Mumbai’s Azad Maidan today, coinciding with Rakshabandhan, to demand “justice for our sister.”
While elective services remain suspended, emergency services at BMC hospitals will continue. The Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) has warned that protests will escalate if their demands are not met.
