In anticipation of the Nabanna Abhijan Rally, West Bengal police have significantly bolstered security around the state secretariat, Nabanna. The rally, scheduled for Tuesday, is organized by Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj and other groups to protest the recent rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College.
The police have implemented extensive measures, including deploying water cannons, vajra vehicles, and Riot Control Force. Roadblocks made from containers have been placed to prevent access to key routes. Additionally, traffic diversions have been announced for major routes such as Kona Expressway, Andul Road, and GT Road to manage congestion and ensure smooth flow around the protest areas.
The rally has been deemed “illegal” by the police, who rejected the application from the organizing group due to the lack of formal permission and necessary details. Despite this, the protest is expected to proceed, raising concerns about potential unrest in Kolkata.
The demonstration comes in response to the brutal killing of the trainee doctor on August 9, an incident that has ignited widespread outrage and demands for justice. The Nabanna Abhijan Rally is the latest in a series of protests seeking accountability and swift action in the case.
