Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, has been arrested in connection with the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Roy, who was not a hospital employee but frequently accessed hospital premises, worked in various roles including disaster management and the police welfare cell.
Reports reveal that Roy was involved in illegal activities at the hospital, such as extorting money from patients’ relatives. Despite his volunteer status, he used his connections to stay in police barracks and often wore attire marked with Kolkata Police insignia, leading many to mistakenly believe he was a regular officer.
Roy, who confessed to the crime with apparent indifference, was identified through CCTV footage and a Bluetooth headset found near the victim. He was arrested after evidence, including bloodstains on his shoes, linked him to the crime. The principal of the medical college has resigned amid nationwide protests demanding enhanced safety measures for healthcare workers. Roy remains in police custody until August 23.
