Rescue operations have escalated in Wayanad district, where over 1,300 rescuers, heavy machinery, and advanced equipment are deployed to search for survivors following catastrophic landslides. The disaster, which struck on July 30, has claimed more than 200 lives, with 273 people injured and around 300 still missing.
The rescue mission, led by the army, police, and emergency services, is further supported by private search and rescue companies and volunteers. Efforts are hampered by large boulders and logs scattered in residential areas like Mundakkai and Chooralmala, complicating the search for trapped individuals.
Authorities have divided the affected regions into zones and utilized GPS, aerial photos, and cell phone data to pinpoint rescue areas. Medical professionals and ambulances are on standby to provide immediate aid to any found survivors.
A 190-foot Bailey bridge, constructed by the army, has been crucial in facilitating access for heavy machinery and ambulances. This temporary bridge will remain in place until a permanent structure can be built.
Rescue teams are also working along the Chaliyar river, where over a hundred bodies have been recovered from its banks.
