On Friday, Vice President Kamala Harris expressed her gratitude to former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama for their endorsement of her presidential bid. Harris took to X (formerly Twitter) to acknowledge their support, saying, “Your endorsements mean so much to me, @MichelleObama and @BarackObama. Let’s get to work.”
The endorsement was made public through a video released earlier that day, which shows Harris receiving a phone call from the Obamas. The video features the former president and first lady expressing their pride in Harris and their commitment to supporting her campaign.
Following President Joe Biden’s decision not to seek re-election and his endorsement of Harris as the Democratic nominee, Harris has gained significant momentum. Biden’s decision, driven by concerns about his ability to defeat Donald Trump at age 81, came shortly before he officially ended his campaign last Sunday.
In the video, President Obama tells Harris, “Michelle and I couldn’t be prouder to endorse you and will do everything we can to help you win this election and reach the Oval Office.” The footage shows Harris taking the call while backstage at an event, accompanied by a Secret Service agent. Michelle Obama adds, “I am proud of you, Kamala. This is going to be historic.”
The endorsement underscores the historical significance of Harris’s candidacy as she aims to follow in the footsteps of the first Black president. Harris, who has known the Obamas since before Obama’s 2008 election, expressed her appreciation for their friendship and support. She also mentioned her eagerness to campaign alongside them in the run-up to the November 5 election, saying, “We’re going to have some fun with this too, aren’t we?”
In addition to Biden’s endorsement, Harris has also received support from other prominent Democrats, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, House Minority Whip Jim Clyburn, former President Bill Clinton, and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The Obamas remain influential figures in Democratic fundraising and continue to draw large crowds at campaign events, making their support a significant boost for Harris’s campaign.
