Indian Railways has dedicated a specially painted WDP4B locomotive, No. 40005 from the Ludhiana Diesel Shed, to Captain Anshuman Singh for his bravery. The locomotive was unveiled on Saturday to honor Singh, who was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra for his courage.
Captain Singh, a medical officer with the 26 Punjab Battalion, was stationed in the Siachen Glacier area. On July 19, 2023, during a fire at an Indian Army ammunition dump, Singh risked his life to rescue individuals trapped in a burning fiberglass hut and to retrieve a crucial medical aid box. Unfortunately, he did not survive the intense fire and strong winds.
The Northern Railway’s post on X highlighted Singh’s courageous actions and noted that his story will inspire future generations. Captain Singh’s Kirti Chakra was awarded posthumously, with his wife Smriti and mother receiving the honor from President Droupadi Murmu.
