The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairy has introduced the Rashtriya Gokul Mission, a comprehensive initiative aimed at boosting milk production, enhancing bovine genetics, and preserving native breeds. This mission seeks to increase productivity and genetic diversity within India’s cattle population.
Supported by the Livestock Health & Disease Control Programme (LHDCP), the initiative provides extensive funding for vaccinations against diseases such as classical swine fever and foot and mouth disease. It also aims to upgrade veterinary infrastructure, including mobile veterinary units (MVUs) that offer on-the-spot assistance to farmers via a toll-free number.
To drive milk production growth, the mission plans to expand artificial insemination services, employ cutting-edge technologies like in vitro fertilization (IVF) and sex-sorted semen, and set up breed multiplication farms. Additionally, it focuses on improving feed and fodder supply chains, offering full incentives for fodder seed production and capital subsidies for facilities that produce feed and related products.
These measures are intended to support farmers, enhance livestock health, and promote growth in India’s dairy industry.
