In a dramatic exchange in Parliament on Friday, Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan and Rajya Sabha Chairperson Jagdeep Dhankhar clashed over parliamentary decorum. Bachchan criticized Dhankhar’s tone as “unacceptable,” prompting Dhankhar to respond sharply, insisting he would not accept a “schooling” and emphasizing the need for decorum.
The confrontation escalated when Dhankhar repeatedly told Bachchan to “take your seat,” leading to increased noise and tension in the Rajya Sabha chamber. Dhankhar defended his actions, stating he had witnessed more than Bachchan and did not require a lecture on conduct.
Following the heated debate, opposition MPs, led by Sonia Gandhi, staged a walkout in support of Bachchan, protesting their exclusion from debates. Congress spokesperson Jairam Ramesh, along with other opposition leaders, criticized the treatment of MPs, particularly highlighting Bachchan’s experience and status.
In response, BJP chief JP Nadda condemned the opposition’s behavior as “indecent” and “irresponsible,” accusing them of undermining the country and democratic values. Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan echoed these sentiments, calling the opposition’s actions an “insult to democracy.”
The altercation underscores ongoing tensions in Parliament over procedural and decorum issues.
