Following Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and the ensuing chaos in Bangladesh starting August 5, over 200 targeted attacks on Hindus have been reported. The violence has resulted in the deaths of five Hindus and multiple instances of sexual assault. The attacks come amid a law enforcement vacuum, with police reportedly not on duty after mobs lynched officers in several districts.
Historian and activist Anupam Debashis Roy notes that while communal violence has always been a factor in Bangladeshi society, the recent scale of attacks—especially on Hindu temples and businesses—appears particularly severe. The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council reports 205 separate incidents involving assaults, arson, and looting.
The violence, which has also targeted non-political Hindu individuals, reflects deep-rooted communal tensions. Authorities are still investigating the causes and extent of the violence, with caution urged over the authenticity of social media claims and the involvement of specific groups.
