Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the importance of resilient supply chains for economic stability during his address at SEMICON 2024, held on the outskirts of Delhi. Speaking on Wednesday, Modi highlighted the crucial role of semiconductors—essential for smartphones, electric vehicles, and AI—and advocated for increased domestic manufacturing of these vital components.
Reflecting on the supply chain disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly those affecting semiconductor supplies from China, Modi underscored the need for India to enhance its manufacturing capabilities. He outlined the government’s commitment to creating a robust semiconductor sector, aiming to have Indian-made chips in every global device.
Modi showcased India’s reformist policies, stable environment, and growing technological market as key factors driving investment in semiconductor manufacturing. He announced that over Rs 1.5 lakh crore has already been pledged to the sector, with numerous projects underway. “When the chips are down, you can bet on India,” he declared, signaling strong confidence in the country’s future as a semiconductor powerhouse.
