The Delhi government has announced a complete ban on the production, sale, and use of firecrackers in the national capital, effective immediately and lasting until January 1, 2025. Environment Minister Gopal Rai stated that the ban aims to control the seasonal surge in air pollution exacerbated by firecrackers.
Rai emphasized that firecrackers significantly worsen winter air pollution in Delhi. The new ban extends to online sales and delivery of firecrackers, ensuring a comprehensive approach to pollution control.
The Delhi government is also preparing a ‘Winter Action Plan’ focusing on 21 key areas to address pollution. Rai urged residents to celebrate festivals with lamps and sweets instead of firecrackers, calling on citizens to become ‘Pollution Warriors’ to help reduce health risks associated with poor air quality.
The ban will be enforced in collaboration with the Delhi Police, Delhi Pollution Control Committee, and the Revenue Department.
