The Indian government has set up a committee to monitor the Indo-Bangladesh border and ensure the safety of Indian citizens and minorities in Bangladesh. This comes amid targeted violence against minorities and protests that led to the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government.
Led by the ADG of the Border Security Force (BSF) Eastern Command, the committee includes senior BSF officials and Land Ports Authority of India (LPAI) members. It will coordinate with Bangladeshi authorities to protect Indian nationals and minority communities.
The unrest in Bangladesh has led to Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus being appointed as interim leader. Yunus has vowed to restore order and protect all citizens following weeks of violence that claimed over 450 lives.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed support for Yunus and reaffirmed India’s commitment to assisting Bangladesh in achieving peace and stability. The turmoil, which began with protests over a job quota plan, escalated into a movement against Hasina, prompting her to flee to India.
