Delhi-NCR is set to face significant transportation disruptions on August 22 and 23 as over 15 auto and taxi driver unions announce a major strike. The protest targets app-based cab services like Ola and Uber, which the unions claim have severely impacted their livelihoods.
Kishan Verma, President of the Delhi Auto Taxi Transport Congress Union, stated that despite numerous appeals to both central and state governments, no action has been taken to address their concerns. Verma criticized the operations of ride-hailing companies, alleging that they are involved in unethical practices and taking excessive commissions of up to 45 percent.
“The government and these companies operate in a game of donations, disregarding the plight of traditional drivers. We demand an end to this,” Verma said. He also criticized the proliferation of private e-rickshaws and bikes, calling for a ban on app-based services and the launch of a government-run app.
During the strike, auto rickshaws, kaali-peeli taxis, economic radio taxis, and taxis with all-India tourist permits will be off the roads, leading to major transportation challenges across Delhi-NCR.
