Bangladesh’s Chief Justice Hassan has agreed to resign “in principle” under mounting pressure from protesters outside the Supreme Court, according to Jamuna TV. Hassan, appointed last year and a known ally of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, faced demands for his resignation as part of broader unrest that resulted in over 450 deaths.
The situation has escalated with a police union strike demanding safety assurances, and violence targeting the Hindu minority community has led many to flee to India. Hasina is currently in New Delhi and plans to return for upcoming elections.
Interim leader Muhammad Yunus, a Nobel laureate, has called for religious unity and aims to stabilize the country following the end of Hasina’s 15-year rule and ongoing anti-government protests.
