In his address on the 78th Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced plans to add 75,000 new medical seats over the next five years, aiming to reduce the number of students going abroad for medical education. Modi highlighted that approximately 25,000 students annually seek medical education overseas, often at significant expense.
Currently, India has 106,333 MBBS seats, with 55,648 in government colleges and 50,685 in private institutions. The government had already increased the number of seats by 5,150 in 2023.
Modi also stressed the importance of internships for youth, noting that they provide valuable experience and enhance global job prospects. He revealed that the government will allocate Rs 1 lakh crore to research and innovation, and has established the National Research Foundation to foster development in science and technology.
Additionally, Modi urged one lakh young people from non-political families to enter politics, aiming to curb nepotism and promote fresh perspectives in the political sphere.
