In his first Independence Day address of his third term, Prime Minister Narendra Modi focused on ideological and political issues, emphasizing a shift towards a “secular civil code” to replace the existing “communal civil code.” Modi framed the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) as a move towards constitutional equality, countering opposition claims that it targets Muslim personal law.
Modi also reiterated his push for simultaneous Lok Sabha and state Assembly elections, citing recommendations from the Ram Nath Kovind Committee and arguing that frequent elections disrupt governance.
Addressing women’s safety, he stressed the need for swift justice and heightened deterrence against violence. Modi also defended his anti-corruption stance, asserting that his administration’s fight against corruption will persist despite criticism.
He called for the induction of 100,000 youth with no political backgrounds into the political system to combat nepotism and invigorate politics with new ideas.
Modi concluded with a message of support for the safety of Bangladeshi Hindus, following recent political upheavals in Bangladesh.
