Following the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government, violence has surged in Bangladesh, targeting both Hindus and Awami League leaders. Reports confirm that 20 Awami League leaders have been killed, and parts of their Dhaka office were set ablaze.
The unrest, originally sparked by student protests against a job quota system, has become widespread chaos. In Comilla city, about 100 km from Dhaka, a mob set fire to the house of former councilor Md Shah Alam. The violence has also led to extensive vandalism and looting of properties belonging to Awami League members and activists. In another incident, a mob set the house of MP Shafiqul Islam Shimul on fire, resulting in the deaths of four people.
Amid the ongoing turmoil, the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh remains active and has provided helpline numbers for Indian nationals. While non-essential staff and their families have returned to India, the commission’s diplomats continue to work on-site.
