In response to growing concerns from parents about managing their children’s technology use, Google has unveiled a new feature called “School Time” aimed at minimizing distractions during school hours. This feature, initially rolled out on Fitbit Ace LTE smartwatches, will now be expanded to select Android phones, tablets, and Samsung Galaxy Watches over the coming year.
The School Time feature allows parents to customize their child’s device settings to display a simplified home screen with restricted functionality during school hours. This aims to help students focus on their studies by limiting access to social media and other distractions. Parents can use the Family Link app to manage which apps are available during School Time and can also set allowances for calls or texts from specific contacts.
Additionally, School Time can be activated outside of school hours to facilitate study sessions or screen breaks.
As children transition into their teenage years, Google’s Family Link continues to offer age-appropriate supervision tools. New features on YouTube will enable parents to link their accounts with their teens’ accounts, providing insights into their activity. Family Link allows parents to manage app access, set screen time limits, and monitor location.
For users under 18, Google enforces default safety settings including SafeSearch, content restrictions, and restrictions on autoplay on YouTube. Recent updates also include safeguards against recommendations of potentially problematic content, such as videos related to body image.
Google remains dedicated to enhancing its tools based on research and expert input, ensuring technology supports rather than hinders educational and developmental needs. With these advancements, Google aims to create a balanced digital experience that aids in learning and personal growth.
