On September 4, Air India Group announced the commencement of a significant Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility at Bengaluru International Airport, covering 35 acres. The new facility, which is expected to create over 1,200 jobs and support more than 200 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Karnataka, underscores Air India’s commitment to enhancing India’s aviation ecosystem.
The MRO facility will serve as a major hub for maintaining Air India’s expanding fleet and will feature advanced technology, including overhead tele platforms and the largest vertical lift hangar doors in India. It will include mega hangars capable of accommodating both wide and narrow-body aircraft, along with a paint hangar.
Earlier this year, Air India signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Karnataka and a strategic partnership agreement with SIA Engineering Company (SIAEC) for the MRO’s development. The facility aims to be on par with top global MRO centers.
Air India also plans to open a Basic Maintenance Training Organisation (BMTO) in Bengaluru by 2025 to ensure a continuous supply of skilled engineers. This development is part of Air India’s broader strategy to enhance fleet maintenance and operational capabilities across its network.
